The Gendering in Science Workshop at TU Graz was a small workshop I wanted to document because it made space for conversations that are often scattered across fields: science of science, gender studies, academic careers, collaboration networks, and the AI era.

The workshop brought together work on structural inequalities in STEM, academic careers, collaboration networks, and the AI era. It was a good setting for this project because retention can be understood not only as an individual decision, but also as a relational process shaped by cohort composition and opportunities to find common ground.

On the second day, participants mapped challenges and possible intervention points for inequality in science. I liked that part of the workshop because it connected empirical research with broader questions about talent loss, inclusion, and how scientific tools are built.

The presentation focused on how peer environments at university entry can shape persistence in higher education. The project measures how well students fit within their entry cohorts, using dimensions such as interests, demographic attributes, and prior educational or geographic background, and asks whether those early forms of similarity and heterogeneity are associated with retention and dropout.
